What Do I Need To Sync Before a Hard Reset On My Windows Phone?

So you need to do a hard reset on your Windows Phone device? Well there maybe times it needs to be done. So, what do you need to sync before a hard reset? I’m glad you asked! Here is the low-down on what will sync and will not sync to your Windows Phone after a hard reset:

Purchased Apps

Games and phone apps sync directly with your phone and are not part of your media content collection in the Zune software on your PC.if you delete a game or app from your device you can reinstall it without purchasing it again. (as long as the developer still includes the app in Marketplace). When go to reinstall a game or app you have already purchased you will see a confirmation that you have already purchased it and can just reinstall the game or app.

Content that is automatically synced with the primary Windows Live ID

If you have signed into your device with a Windows Live ID, here is what is synced to the cloud automatically,

  • Contacts for the primary Windows Live ID
  • Email messages, Calendar events and appointments for the primary Windows Live ID
  • 720×540 pixel pictures taken on the phone
    • Keep in mind photos are automatically uploaded to  SkyDrive only if you have that feature enabled
  • OneNote files will be automatically synced to SkyDrive also if that feature is enabled

Content that is automatically synced from additional email accounts:

Other email, calendar and contacts for additional accounts are synced from the cloud to their prospective services (i.e. Google, Exchange and so on). You can perform a manual sync from your device for each additional email account on your device prior to a hard reset from Start, Settings, email + accountsTap and hold the name of the email account, once you get the white menu then Tap sync.

Content that requires a sync with a computer running Zune software

  • Videos and full resolution pictures taken on the device.
    • Remember – If you want to make sure that you have backups of your videos and full resolution pictures, sync your device with the Zune software on your PC before a  hard reset. Check your settings in Zune to make sure your sync settings are correct.

Content that cannot be synced

  • Text messages 9if you have information stored in a text message its a good idea to forward it to a trust location (i.e. your email account)
  • Contact groups
  • Call history
  • Account configuration (social networks or email accounts that are on your device)
  • Manually linked contacts and or assigned contact photos
  • Phone settings you have customized (i.e. themes applied or Start screen layout)

So these are just some things to make sure get done before you have to perform a hard rest on your Windows Phone. Once you do and the device boots back up. Sign in with your Primary Windows Live ID and you will be back up and running in no time. One thing I do reccommend is that the first app you install on your device is Reinstaller, “Reinstaller can help by presenting a list of all the apps that are associated with your Live account, and allow you to install all or just some of them.”
